The Perth Mint remained under Britain’s jurisdiction until July 1, 1970, when ownership transferred to the State Government of Western Australia. It continues to process 400 tons of gold annually and sells the majority of the coins it produces through its global distribution network.
The Perth Mint produces uncirculated coins under an agreement with the Australia Government. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gold Corporation which is a statutory corporation established by the Gold Corporation Act 1987 (WA). Gold Corporation is owned by the Western Australian Government.
Each coin struck by the Mint has Australian legal tender status and guaranteed weight and purity. Bullion issues account for 90% of the Mint’s total coin sales, which exceeded nine million coins in 2017.
Remarkable Refinery Reputation
The Perth Mint refinery analyzes bullion accuracy, reliability and integrity in its London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) accredited laboratory.
Highly trained chemists and technicians operate the technically advanced laboratory using state-of-the-art equipment, including high performance simultaneous Inductively Coupled Plasma and Spark Optical Emission spectrometers, and Wavelength dispersive X-ray Fluorescent spectrometers.
The refinery’s reputation for extraordinary quality and expertise means it is trusted by other refiners and international precious metals producers throughout the world to conduct UMPIRE or independent Mine Check Analysis upon their own products. The Perth Mint provides bullion assaying, ICP base metal scans, and high purity metals analysis of Gold, Silver, Platinum and Palladium.
